Andrii Matiukha Foundation and Good Donations Provide Thompson Surgical System to Okhmatdyt: Over 60 Procedures Performed in Two Months

In February 2025, the National Specialized Children’s Hospital Okhmatdyt received a state-of-the-art Thompson surgical retractor system for its emergency surgery department. The equipment, valued at UAH 2.22 million, was purchased and delivered with the support of the Andrii Matiukha Foundation in partnership with the charitable organization Good Donations.
In the first two months of using the new system, doctors have already performed over 60 complex surgeries. According to Roman Zhezhera, Head of the Emergency Surgery Department, the patients included children with cancer, congenital disorders, and blast injuries.
“The retractor allows surgeons to work with both hands free, improves visibility of the surgical field, and enables faster, safer procedures — which is especially critical in pediatric surgery. The doctors at Okhmatdyt are fully committed to their work, and our mission is to provide them with everything they need to save lives,” — said Andrii Matiukha, founder of the namesake foundation.
The Thompson retractor system is one of the most highly recommended tools in its category. It is widely used in neurosurgery, abdominal, oncological, orthopedic, and thoracic procedures. Its design offers improved ergonomics, shortens operation times, reduces strain on medical teams, and minimizes risks to patients.
Okhmatdyt’s emergency surgery department operates 24/7, providing diagnostic and treatment services to young patients from across Ukraine. Each year, the department performs over 300 life-saving surgeries, often utilizing minimally advanced medical approaches.
The delivery of the Thompson system is part of the Andrii Matiukha Foundation’s broader efforts to support the Ukrainian healthcare system. These efforts include targeted aid and collaboration with other charitable organizations to address the urgent needs of medical institutions.
